Coordination and Feedback: Roles of interjectory utterances in spoken Japanese discourse
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report an empirical study on interjectory responses, utterances such as hai, ee, and un, corresponding roughly to 'yes' or '11h-huh' in English, with special emphasis on the way they help coordinate, and enhance mutual understanding in, dialogue. A corpus of data has been collected from telephone conversations, as well as from radio and television programs. Our analysis demonstrates that these expressions should be interpreted in a highly context dependent manner and that their use involves a complex coordination mechanism that encompasses different hierarchical levels of coordination. We also discuss the way in which appropriate analysis of these interjectory responses is relevant for natural language understanding and speech act recognition.

Roles of interjectory utterances in spoken discourse
analysis of Japanese interjectory responses in everyday dialogue. Interjectory responses (IRs) in Japanese are utterances such as hai, ee, and un, corresponding roughly to `yes' or `uh-huh' in English. They are typically used in response to yes-no questions and requests or are interjected, as feed-backs, between the interlocutor's utterances to keep the dialogue owing smoothly. Although IRs are...

متن کاملDiscourse Markers In Spontaneous Dialogue: A Corpus Based Study Of Japanese And English
A spontaneously spoken, natural Japanese discourse contains many instances of the so-called redundant interjections and of back-channel utterances. These expressions have not hitherto received much attention and few systematic analyses have been made, since they were regarded as useless, spurious expressions. On the basis of the analysis of spoken dialogue corpus, we claim that these utterances...
متن کاملA Phonological Study on Japanese Discourse Markers
A spontaneously spoken, natural Japanese discourse contains many instances of the so-called redundant interjections and of backchannel utterances. These expressions have not hitherto received much attention and few systematic analyses have been made. We show that these utterances are characterizable as discourse markers, and that they comprise a well-defined category, characterizable in a regul...

A restricted number of words frequently and regularly found within utterances structure the dialogues by marking certain significant locations. Furthermore, a variety of signals of monitoring and repairing...
